Noted. The green bags are not to protect the trunk of the tree. The bags are watering bags that are filled during the growing season with water. The bags were properly installed by the planting contractor to the specifications set forth by the City of Boston Tree Warden. The watering bags should be installed around the tree stake itself and not the trunk of the tree. This is done to prevent the trunk of the tree from being damaged by the wet conditions that the watering bag creates around the trunk as well as to encourage new root growth outside of the root ball. Since the watering bag sits on top of the root ball it still waters the tree when it is filled.
