Category: Commercial Mechanical Noise / Structural Vibration Impact Location (affected residence): 60 Kilmarnock St, Boston, MA 02215 (Facing the rear alley toward Peterborough St restaurants) Description of Issue: There is a persistent low-frequency impact noise coming from the rear mechanical/service area behind the restaurants on Peterborough Street. The sound travels through the alley and is clearly audible inside our apartment at 60 Kilmarnock St. The noise began approximately one week ago and did not exist previously, suggesting a new mechanical installation or a malfunctioning commercial unit. Noise Characteristics: • Deep, muffled thud / impact sound • Resembles heavy object dropping or equipment hitting structure • Occurs in irregular bursts (1–5 impacts at a time) • Occurs 24 hours/day, including 2–4 AM overnight • Audible indoors with windows closed • Not originating from our building • Highly likely from restaurant mechanical equipment (freezer compressor, grease trap pump, HVAC / exhaust fan motor, or similar) Impact: • Sleep disruption • Ongoing disturbance and stress • Continuous for multiple days Additional Info: We contacted our building management, who confirmed the sound originates externally and advised us to report the issue to the City. Request: Please investigate commercial mechanical noise/vibration behind the Peterborough Street restaurants and coordinate mitigation. The noise appears to result from either new equipment or failing equipment cycling on/off, causing structural impact noise into nearby residences.
