340 Meridian St, Boston, MA 02128Location: Rear alley of 340 Meridian St, Unit 1, East Boston, MA 02128 (shared alley used for trash access) Description: A dark, foul-smelling liquid has been repeatedly pooling in the alley behind this address, with the problem worsening significantly after rainfall. It leaves a thick, sticky sludge residue on the pavement that does not dry or wash away on its own. The substance has an odor consistent with sewage or a chemical/fuel product and has soiled my vehicle, shoes, and clothing on contact. Multiple residents in the building have independently noticed and commented on the smell. When pedestrians walk by the entrance to the alley the chemical smell can blow directly in their face out into the street. Residents are required to walk through this area to bring trash to the curb, so this is a recurring exposure, not a one-time incident. There are gas meters located near the affected area, so I'd like this treated as a possible utility/hazard issue pending inspection, in addition to a sanitary concern. Separately, the entrance to this alley was recently filled with cement by the city.. Request: Please send an inspector to identify the source of the liquid and determine whether this constitutes a sanitary code violation under 105 CMR 410, and to evaluate whether the nearby gas infrastructure needs inspection. Photos attached: pooled liquid, alley condition, residue coating damaging cars.
