16 Melbourne St, Dorchester, Ma, 02124I live in the St. Marks neighborhood of Dorchester. On several days, between approximately 5:00 AM and 6:30 AM, I have noticed a loud low-frequency noise, a strong steady vibration that typically lasts several minutes. The vibration, while certainly audible, is almost felt more than heard; it's rather like experiencing heavy bass from a subwoofer speaker. The noise starts abruptly, lasts between 5 and 15 minutes, and ends just as abruptly. The first instance I recall noticing this noise was around 5:15 AM on December 22, 2025, as I was preparing to depart my home to catch a train at South Station. The most recent instance was heard today, Saturday January 17, 2026 starting at approximately 6:11 AM and ending 6:20 AM. I've attempted to capture recordings of this noise but, given the low-frequency nature of the noise and the quality of recording equipment available (a sound recording app on my smartphone), my recordings haven't successfully captured the noise above other ambient sounds. I'm filing this report to request help in hopefully determine the source of this noise, for peace of mind if nothing else, but preferably with the goal of mitigating the noise. Given its recurrence at the same general time of day, I was hoping a cursory observation of the noise by city employees, with the goal of determining its source and working towards mitigating it, could be quickly achieved. I'm certain that anyone near the MBTA shuttle cap immediately south of Shawmut Station, or standing in Dr. Loesch Family Park would hear this noise as it occurs.
