Rodent Activity
501 E Fifth St, South Boston, Ma, 02127Subject: Improper Use of Toxic Chemicals (Mothballs) for Rodent Control. I am writing to report the improper and hazardous application of what appear to be mothballs (naphthalene/paradichlorobenzene) used as a DIY rodent deterrent. These white pellets have been placed inside and around rat burrows on my neighbor’s property and have also spread onto my property near my shed. While I understand the neighbor is working with the city to address a rat problem, these pellets have remained for over 48 hours without dissolving, confirming they are not dry ice. Concerns: • Public Safety: These pellets are scattered in the open where they are easily accessible to pets and local wildlife. • Toxicity: As a dog owner, I am extremely concerned about the high risk of ingestion and chemical poisoning. Even a single mothball can be fatal to a small animal. • Environmental Impact: These chemicals are leaching into the soil and emitting strong vapors in a residential area. Requested Action: I request that an inspector from Inspectional Services (ISD) or Pest Control visit the site to identify the substance and ensure it is professionally and safely removed. The current placement is a violation of safe pesticide use and poses an immediate threat to neighborhood pets.
