PATIENTS AT RISK AT BWH! A nursing strike is planned to take place tomorrow July 8th at Brigham and Eomens hospital in Boston. MGB execs refuse to negotiate a contract and instead will spend $100 million on temporary nurses to fill staffing needs for a 1 day strike and 4 day lockout. MGB claims they are committed to provide safe patient care from “experienced nurses who have the education and licensure required”. However, these nurses themselves say that “BWH doesn’t care, they will take what they can get” via online forums on Facebook. Many of these nurses are traveling same day, saying themselves they are overtired and will not be arriving on site until midnight the night before they are supposed to report at 7 am the next day. These nurses are also taking seeking same-day certification courses for advanced skills that any experienced nurse should already have. This is truly alarming for patient safety at one of the largest hospitals taking care of the sickest populations.
