I am requesting a site-specific traffic engineering and safety review of Centre Street in the vicinity of 1593 Centre Street, particularly the curve in this area. This is a follow-up to Boston 311 Case #101005905571, which I submitted in February 2025. At that time, I raised concerns about recurring crashes and chronic speeding at this location and asked about speed humps. BTD explained that Centre Street is not eligible for speed humps because it is a major roadway and carries MBTA bus service. I am not requesting speed humps with this report. I am asking BTD to evaluate what other engineering measures can be used to address the underlying safety problem. Residents continue to observe vehicles traveling at unsafe speeds through this curve, and crashes have occurred repeatedly in this immediate area over the years. There are also significant concerns for residents entering and exiting parked vehicles along Centre Street, where a speeding or out-of-control vehicle leaves very little margin for error. There is documented crash history in the vicinity as well. For example, a September 2019 crash was reported at South Street where it joins Centre Street near Holy Name, in which an SUV struck a parked vehicle and another SUV ended up on the sidewalk. More broadly, the City itself has identified Centre Street in West Roxbury as a corridor with a history of speeding and crashes resulting in injury and death. I am specifically requesting that BTD: Conduct a multi-day speed and traffic-volume study on both approaches to this curve, including the 85th-percentile speed and the percentage of vehicles exceeding the posted speed limit. Review BPD, EMS/Vision Zero, and MassDOT crash records for this location and the surrounding section of Centre Street. Conduct an on-site traffic-engineering assessment of the curve, including roadway geometry, sight lines, lane width, pavement markings, signage, lighting, roadside hazards, and the risk posed to parked vehicles and pedestrians. Evaluate physical traffic-calming and speed-management measures that are compatible with MBTA bus service, such as lane narrowing/restriping, speed-feedback signage, enhanced curve-warning treatments, pavement markings, pedestrian improvements, or other appropriate engineering measures. Consider whether safety treatments used elsewhere on Centre Street could be adapted to this section. Boston's recent Centre Street safety project demonstrated that substantial reductions in speeding can be achieved on an MBTA bus corridor without speed humps. My concern is not simply that drivers are violating the speed limit; it is that the roadway design appears to allow vehicles to approach and travel through this curve at speeds that have repeatedly resulted in loss-of-control crashes and dangerous close calls. I would like the City to evaluate whether the roadway itself can be changed to reduce that risk before a more serious or fatal crash occurs. I am happy to provide photographs, information about crashes witnessed by residents, or meet City staff at the location.
