Case Noted | Stop signs are not supposed to be installed for speed control. Stop signs are installed for right of way access. Stop signs, when installed properly go through a stop sign warrant study. These signs were probably installed due to requests from residents and did not go through the proper protocols and/or channels. Typically streets that carry the most traffic has the right of way at an unsignalized intersection. Vehicles are probably "blowing" through the stop sign because it shouldn't be there and is not doing what it was "intended" for , which is to slow traffic. BTD will therefore do a study to see if the stop sign is warranted and if not, the signs will be removed. With that said, We share your concerns about making the City streets safer and we recently revised our speed hump program so that neighborhoods can receive them more quickly. We aim to slow traffic to make every street in the City safer and more comfortable for walking, biking, and rolling. A map is available on boston.gov that shows which streets in the City will receive speed humps during the first three-year phase of construction. We will continue to update the map as new phases of construction are determined. We plan to design and build speed humps in about ten areas each year for the next three years. This is approximately 500 speed humps per year. Your street is eligible for speed humps but they are not imminently planned. Streets have been prioritized based on a series of criteria that promotes the safety of all street users. We evaluated each area for its safety history, demographics (higher numbers of children, older adults, and people with a disability), if there are parks, schools, community centers nearby, plans for repaving and ramp construction, and needs otherwise identified by the residents of the neighborhood. We will work to continue to scale up our capacity as quickly as possible. Thank you for contacting 311 and BTD.
