Description
This off leash dog killed a federally protected migratory bird (a Semipalmated Sandpiper) at the Millennium Park canoe launch today (9/6/24) just before 2pm; the dog’s owner encouraged it to chase and flush dozens of other similarly protected species and did nothing once it caught and killed one. She was a 45+ year old white woman, average height and build, brown/gray/graying hair in a ponytail and had a group of 5-6 dogs in total, all off leash. I doubt the city will care or do much but this is a very similar scenario to the killing of a Great Blue Heron at the Arnold Arboretum in 2015 and all the same laws that applied to that incident apply to this one (see: https://www.wcvb.com/article/protected-bird-species-killed-by-unleashed-dog-in-boston-park/8225959). This person deserves some serious fines. | Case (SR) Type: [Animal Care & Control] Referred To: [ANIMAL CARE & CONTROL STAFF]
