Description
In the process of removing a dead tree, the workers destroyed an ornamental metal tree surround structure (1 of 4 on our block) that several of us donated money to have built and installed. Boston Police Officer Cooley who was directing traffic during the final removal of the tree surround structure has this on his bodycam and we discussed it with him. We have some of the broken pieces of the tree surround that can be reused and rewelded together; however, at least one side of the four-sided structure is missing and another side has been mangled and will need to be replaced. We ask that the City of Boston reimburse us for the cost of repairing and reinstalling this tree structure. Details: About 10 years ago, several neighbors on our block of Shawmut Avenue (between San Juan and West Newton) contributed money to have four matching ornamental metal tree surrounds built and installed around the four trees on the residential side of Shawmut Avenue. These structures are built to be durable and beautiful and cost thousands of dollars to fabricate and install. During the removal of the tree closest to San Juan Street, the city, without any warning to the neighbors, cut the tree surround into two pieces and bent one end of the structure such that it is no longer useable. See photos. We were able to salvage one long-side of the structure. Then the week of October 13th the City came back to plant a new tree. In the process, they were going to throw away the remaining (bent) piece of the structure. We noticed this in time and prevented them from taking away this last piece and destroying it. In fact, they were kind enough to help us remove it from their truck and take it to our garden so that we could try and reconstruct the surround at some point in the future.
