Description
The EMS trash bin located behind or beside this facility is a standard unsecured trash can and is regularly overflowing. It contains used medical gloves and similar waste from patient care. As seen in attached photos, gloves have blown into the adjacent public roadway and sidewalk, including under parked vehicles and construction equipment. Although the trash bin itself was emptied recently, the medical gloves and waste that blew into the surrounding area were not removed and remain on the ground. The bin is not labeled, sealed, protected, or intended for biohazard containment. Per 105 CMR 480.000 (Massachusetts State Sanitary Code, Chapter VIII), medical materials contaminated by blood or bodily fluids or used during patient care must be collected in sealed, leak-proof, tear-resistant red/orange containers clearly labeled as biohazard. Storing such waste in an ordinary trash receptacle accessible to the public and exposed to the environment is noncompliant and presents a public health risk. Request: Please inspect the location and ensure the EMS station follows proper regulated medical waste procedures and containment. Request corrective action to prevent ongoing contamination of public areas. Supporting Details: • Address from onsite signage: 101 W Broadway, South Boston, MA 02127 • Medical gloves visible on pavement and under vehicles • Trash can lacks lid (often left off) and cannot contain waste during wind • Photos attached
