Short Term Rental

- Description
- I am submitting a safety complaint regarding a short term rental at 62 Boylston Street, Unit 720, Boston, MA 02116, which I rented through Airbnb and which was operated by Evonify Corporate & Medical Housing. I checked into the unit on Monday, September 14, 2026. On Tuesday morning, September 15, the electronic smart lock stopped functioning completely. There was no alternative means of entering the unit, leaving me locked outside without access to my belongings or medication. When I returned to the property during my lunch break on Tuesday, I discovered that the management company's response had been to disable the smart lock and place duct tape over the locking mechanism. While this allowed the door to open, it also meant that the unit could no longer be locked or secured from either the inside or the outside. This was not simply an inconvenience involving a malfunctioning electronic lock. From that point forward, I was staying in a short term rental where the entrance door could not be secured at all. When I left the unit, I had no way to lock the door and protect my belongings. When I was inside the unit, including while sleeping, I had no functioning lock protecting me from someone entering. I ultimately barricaded the door from the inside at night because there was no other way for me to secure it. From Tuesday through my checkout on Thursday, September 17, I repeatedly contacted Evonify about this condition. I was repeatedly assured that maintenance was being contacted and that the lock would be repaired. I also communicated extensively with Airbnb regarding the safety issue. Despite these repeated assurances, the lock remained disabled and the door remained incapable of being secured when I checked out on Thursday. I am filing this complaint primarily because I am concerned about the safety of future guests. A future guest, particularly someone traveling alone or someone in a more vulnerable situation, could be placed in the same circumstances. I am requesting that Boston Inspectional Services review this property and determine whether Unit 720 is operating in compliance with applicable short term rental, housing, and safety requirements, including whether the unit is properly registered and whether its entrance and locking systems meet applicable requirements. I can provide more photographs and videos showing the disabled and duct taped lock, photographs documenting its condition through the end of my stay, my Airbnb reservation information, and communications with both Evonify and Airbnb documenting the issue and the repeated representations that the lock would be repaired. | : [Is there an apartment number?: []
