On Friday evening, September 26th, 2026 at approximately 9:45pm, my husband, a cyclist on his commute home from his job in the Seaport was doored, resulting in bodily injuries and with the bike so damaged, he couldn't ride it home. The bike is currently at the bike repair shop. I'm incensed as this is the 2nd time in a year this has happened to him. The stretch of Seaport Blvd from the Moakley Bridge to the Leader Bank Pavilion, both sides, is dangerous for cyclists as cars routinely park in the bike lanes, forcing riders out into the traffic. Ride share drivers routinely pull over to pick up and drop off passengers and it's the disembarking passengers who cause the most damage as they cannot see behind them and open their doors rapidly, causing accidents like the one my husband suffered. When I came to pick up my injured husband and his damaged bike, there were 2 Boston Police cruisers on scene, with blue lights flashing as they documented the scene. Astonishingly, despite the flashing blue lights, a driver pulled over and blocked the bike lane in front of us. That's how common and blatant this practice is. I realize this is not a quick fix issue, but something needs to change and I beg of you not to wait until someone is killed to be the catalyst for change. Ideally, we'd have a protected bike lane. But for now, the situation is dangerous and untenable. What is needed right now is constant heavy enforcement from either parking officers to aggressively ticket to visible police presence to keep everyone where they belong. A short term solution could be the creation of designated pick up and drop off zones for ride shares and their pick up and delivery counterparts. Please take this seriously. My husband is alive and his bike is in the shop, hopefully repairable and I consider us lucky. Please don't let my husband or any one else be the ultimate victim in order to force a change of ways in this area.
