Description
Joe Moakley park is barren. Most of the park is actually a paved lawn that gets mowed unnecessarily and way too often, rather than a green haven to escape. As we grapple with the most intense El Niño in over a century, in addition to increasingly warm summers due to global warming and higher propensity to coastal flooding - the city needs to invest in more green places that’s are actually covered in trees and native shrubs, rather than a lawn monoculture. Contrary to planning, most of the park is not used for recreational sports but a small fraction of it. The rest of it lies unused, covered in the thinnest layer of sedge - long enough to deceive us into thinking it’s a green haven, but not thick enough for wildlife to call it a home. We need denser native tree coverage, more native shrubs for the butterflies and bees to call it home, and less mowing overall.
