- Imagine sitting in the middle of a bouncy house while people form a circle around you, jumping nonstop and tossing you in every direction. Or imagine driving down the street while your keys rattle in the ignition like a wind chime. As humorous as those images may be, that’s the reality of driving on Savin Hill Avenue, particularly from Dorchester Avenue to Sydney Street, and especially the block between Dorchester Avenue and Sagamore Street. The neighborhood rumor is that one of the utility companies is responsible for the road's condition. However, I’m confident that if the Boston Transportation Department reviews the street closure permits, it will find that nearly every utility company has performed work on this stretch over the past three or four years. Regardless of who dug up the road, this is a City of Boston street, and the responsibility for providing a safe, smooth driving surface ultimately rests with the City. So, this is a long way of saying: please make this a priority. Repave the roadway, properly restore the surface, and repaint the lane markings. Residents, commuters, cyclists, and emergency vehicles all use this street every day, and it has deteriorated to the point where it deserves immediate attention.
