Description
DESCRIPTION / ISSUE DETAILS: A vital reminder for all public service personnel regarding their foundational duties to serve the community dutifully, politely, and with deep empathy, patience, and understanding. Public service requires a commitment to community care, infrastructure safety, and transparent engagement. The majority of times residents reach out to city departments, they are experiencing their most vulnerable moments or navigating highly upsetting and traumatic situations. Negative verbiage or raw frustration displayed by residents under stress is an expression of that vulnerability; public personnel must learn not to personalize this transferred stress, and they must utilize patience to de-escalate negativity to the absolute best of their ability. Simultaneously, mutual respect is mandatory. Public servants are dedicated workers who do not deserve, nor do they need, to be disrespected, and the public must be reminded to remain respectful. Handling high-pressure moments with a calm, de-escalating posture preserves the dignity of both the worker and the citizen, keeping safety and equity at the center of all community interactions.
