Description
On Thursday, October 8 my brother underwent surgery at Beth Israel Hospital, Shapiro Center, 3rd floor under the direction of Dr. Ramappa and was released on late Thursday afternoon. On Friday, he began to notice several insects crawling on him (photos attached). He notified the physician’s office that we found multiple small blood-feeding insects on his leg after discharge, and we have a specimen/photo. He was told it was probably ticks and he should call his primary care doctor’s office. He did not come in to the hospital with insects nor had he left our home the previous week. He does not lead at-risk lifestyle. We have been treating this as lice or bedbugs—using lice shampoos, insect spray formulated for lice and bugs, sanitizing washing and drying and steaming furniture. Given that this is a healthcare surgical suite, Beth Israel should execute an auditable protocol to quickly evaluate the situation and safeguard patients.
