- To: City of Boston — Mayor’s Office, Public Works Department, and relevant neighborhood planning officials Subject: Request to Install Solar-Powered Decorative Lights to Beautify and Brighten Our Community Dear City of Boston Officials, I am writing to respectfully request that the City of Boston explore the installation of solar-powered decorative lighting along Talbot Avenue and Blue Hill Avenue to help brighten our community and create a more welcoming, vibrant, and joyful environment for residents, families, and visitors. Lighting has the power to transform a neighborhood. Beyond its practical purpose, thoughtfully designed lighting can create a sense of warmth, pride, connection, and belonging. Our community deserves the same opportunities to enjoy attractive public spaces that bring people together and make neighborhood streets feel inviting. Other Boston neighborhoods, including the South End, have incorporated decorative string lights into their streetscapes and trees, demonstrating how simple enhancements can add charm, character, and a welcoming atmosphere to public spaces. We would love to see similar creative improvements considered for Talbot Avenue and Blue Hill Avenue. We propose that the City explore options such as: Solar-powered string lights connecting suitable street fixtures or other approved structures. Decorative lights in appropriate trees, where safe and permitted. Energy-efficient, weather-resistant lighting that can operate sustainably throughout the year. A small pilot installation in a suitable section of Talbot Avenue or Blue Hill Avenue, allowing the community and the City to evaluate its impact before expanding the project. This request is about more than adding lights. It is about investing in the emotional and visual well-being of our neighborhood, encouraging community pride, and creating public spaces that feel cared for and appreciated. Small improvements to our shared environment can make a meaningful difference in how residents experience their streets and connect with one another. We respectfully ask the City to assess the feasibility, costs, placement, maintenance, and necessary permissions for this initiative, with consideration for pedestrian safety, accessibility, nearby residents, and existing infrastructure. We believe our neighborhood deserves thoughtful beautification and the opportunity to enjoy the same welcoming touches found in other parts of Boston. We would welcome the opportunity to work with city officials, neighborhood organizations, and fellow residents to help bring this vision to life. Thank you for your time, consideration, and continued commitment to making Boston a city where every neighborhood can thrive. Sincerely, A Concerned Community Resident On behalf of residents who support a brighter, more welcoming, and more connected Talbot Avenue and Blue Hill Avenue community.
