- BOSTON TRANSPORTATION DEPARTMENT Resident Parking Program Division 1 City Hall Square, Room 721 Boston, MA 02201 SUBJECT: Formal Request for Resident Permit Parking Evaluation – Dorchester, MA To the Boston Transportation Department Resident Parking Division, I am writing as a full-time resident of Dorchester to formally request a neighborhood parking evaluation for our block to convert it from an unrestricted parking zone into a designated Resident Permit Parking Only zone. Our street consists entirely of high-density triple-decker homes. Because these residential properties lack driveways or off-street parking facilities, the on-street curb space is a vital resource for the residents who live here. Unfortunately, this finite resource is currently being severely overwhelmed due to our direct proximity to local commercial businesses (specifically a local pizza restaurant and nail salon). We regularly face severe parking congestion caused by a combination of: 1. Commercial Overflow: Patrons and delivery drivers from the adjacent commercial lot frequently utilize our residential street for short-term and long-term parking, creating high-turnover traffic, double-parking hazards, and neighborhood friction. 2. Space Hoarding & Neighbor Conflict: Because the street is entirely unrestricted, some households are weaponizing the public curb by shuffling multiple idle vehicles to hoard spaces, forcing residents with severe mobility impairments to regularly park multiple blocks away from their homes. This ongoing commercial overflow and lack of regulation has significantly degraded the quality of life, safety, and accessibility on our block. Introducing a Resident Permit Parking restriction would protect the neighborhood, ensure that spaces are preserved for the people who actually live here, and deter commercial patrons from treating our residential street as an auxiliary parking lot. I kindly request that BTD dispatch an enforcement or engineering representative to assess the parking density and commercial overflow on our block, and provide the necessary petition guidelines so we can begin gathering signatures from our neighbors. Thank you for your time, consideration, and dedication to keeping Boston's residential neighborhoods accessible. Sincerely, Molly Jennings, 7 Semont Road, Unit 1, Dorchester, MA 02124
