- Description
- Request for Street Lighting Assessment & Improvements – Rogers Park, Brighton I am a Brighton resident requesting an evaluation of the existing street lighting surrounding Rogers Park, particularly along the park’s perimeter and adjacent residential streets. During the warmer months, the tennis courts and baseball fields provide supplemental lighting to the surrounding area. However, once the athletic season ends and those lights are no longer in use, the surrounding streets and sidewalks become extremely dark, creating significant visibility and pedestrian safety concerns. As an expecting first-time mom and dog owner who regularly walks through the neighborhood, I am particularly concerned about navigating these areas after sunset, especially during the fall and winter months when daylight hours are shorter. This is a year-round community safety concern that affects dog walkers, families, runners, and other residents. I have been in direct communication with Boston Parks & Recreation regarding the upcoming Rogers Park improvements. While additional pedestrian security lighting is being considered, construction funding is not expected until FY2028. Boston Parks & Recreation specifically directed me to submit a 311 request so that Public Works can evaluate the street lighting in this area. I am formally requesting that Public Works assess the current lighting conditions surrounding Rogers Park and explore opportunities to install additional streetlights or implement interim lighting improvements before 2028. I would appreciate an update on whether an assessment can be conducted and what near-term solutions may be available to address these safety concerns. Thank you for your time and consideration.
