Install New Signal

- Description
- I am requesting that a traffic light be installed at this intersection due to ongoing safety concerns for both pedestrians and drivers. This intersection is extremely dangerous, as drivers frequently fail to stop at the existing stop signs, creating multiple situations where pedestrians and vehicles narrowly avoid being hit. Pedestrians attempting to cross the street are regularly put at risk because drivers often disregard the stop signs. Additionally, vehicles traveling up School Street are frequently at risk of being struck by crossing traffic. The wall located at the corner of the intersection creates a significant blind spot, preventing drivers approaching from the crossing street from seeing vehicles coming up School Street. This makes it extremely difficult for drivers to safely navigate the intersection. There are also frequent instances of children walking from Rafael Hernandez School and the nearby park who need to cross this intersection. These children are particularly vulnerable, and there have been numerous close calls involving drivers who fail to stop and yield to pedestrians. It should not take an actual accident or serious injury for action to be taken. Overall, this intersection presents a significant safety hazard for pedestrians, children, and motorists. A traffic light would provide better traffic control, improve visibility of right-of-way expectations, and significantly reduce the risk of accidents. If installing a traffic light is not possible, I strongly encourage the city to consider alternative safety improvements, including: * Raising the crosswalk to create a speed bump effect and force drivers to slow down. * Installing illuminated pedestrian crossing buttons and flashing crosswalk signs to alert approaching drivers when someone is crossing. * Adding brighter streetlights and improved lighting around the crosswalk and intersection. * Installing additional reflective signage and other visibility measures to make pedestrians more noticeable, particularly at night. This intersection becomes even more dangerous after dark, when visibility is reduced and drivers have an even harder time seeing pedestrians. These improvements could make a meaningful difference in preventing a serious accident. The safety of the people who live, work, attend school, and walk through this area should be a priority. I strongly urge the city to evaluate this intersection and take action before someone gets seriously injured.
