This photo, of the intersection of Albany St. with Mass. Ave. devoid of crosswalk lines, was taken over 48 hours ago, yet they were still absent this afternoon. Regular vehicular and pedestrian commuters through the junction were probably familiar enough with the blacked-out demarcations’ former locations that they remember to stop short of them to allow the relatively thick pedestrian traffic typical of this area, which serves Boston Medical Center and two institutions that work with the city's homeless, enough space to walk safely in. Would a pedestrian hit by a car or truck while crossing these streets via the former location of the now-absent white lines have legal recourse equivalent to that of one hit while walking over a standard, clearly-delineated crosswalk? I'm forced to gesture at the walk sign to get drivers impatient to bear right from Mass. Ave. onto Albany St. to allow me to traipse briskly across most afternoons. Couldn't the driver claim ignorance if the lines aren't visible? The project’s city- or state-level managers should be ashamed to be associated with the chaos that inspired me to document this!
